Given that we’re all stuck inside, we need to help you keep your skin healthy in these circumstances. The first thing to be mindful is to keep healthy. Staying physically and emotionally healthy is paramount, and we trust you are taking care of yourself.
And now we want to help you to keep your skin healthy.
Cleansing:
While we’re sure you’ve all got the memo about washing hands; your face and bodies also need adequate cleansing.
Cleansing morning and night helps to remove debris and dirt as well as surface dead skin cells that can accumulate on the skin throughout the day, leading to congestion and breakouts.
Your cleanser can be matched to your personal preference of texture but also your oil flow. To find out what the best cleanser is for your skin type, contact one of our friendly dermal clinicians for a video consultation or view the products
Serums:
Serums are like a little personal trainer for the skin, helping you to dig deeper and achieve your goals and get better results. Depending on your skins condition or your skin goals, there are a plethora of serums that can help you get there.
So what serums are best to use while you’re inside? Even though you are indoors, you are still exposed to radiation- one, namely ‘blue light’ that emits from all tv’s, tablets and gadgets, can cause increased ageing in the skin.
The use of antioxidant serums such as vitamin C and E (such as Medik8 C Tetra Intense that contains both) can help to combat this free radical damage. Another common indoor skin concern is hot or stuffy rooms; this can cause flushing redness and irritation to the skin.
Hydrating and calming serums can help to relieve this discomfort and prevent it from getting worse, others can help to induce collagen production; strengthening the skin and make it more resilient. Our go-to serum for hydration and calming are our B5 serums. (We have The Skincare company B5, Medik8 B5 & Medik8 B5 Intense) Serums
Hydration:
Just like our bodies, your skin functions better when it is hydrated. One of the main functions of the skin is protection – providing a barrier between your body and your environment; it helps protect you from foreign pathogens that can enter and cause our bodies harm.
To maintain and keep that barrier strong, it needs help or reinforcement. Moisturisers contain emollients that help to create a fine film over the skin, locking in the moisture, keeping the skin barrier strong and supple and providing an extra barrier to block foreign material.
Depending on where you are applying (face, body, hands), the oil content in your skin, as well as personal preference of texture will all influence what the best moisturiser will be for you. We have a wide range of moisturisers available via our online store.
Sunlight:
You need to get some sunlight to ensure your skin stays healthy and strong. Sunlight on your skin is crucial for healthy cell growth, repair and metabolism as well as vitamin D synthesis, which is essential to: healthy bones and teeth, cognitive function, * supporting our immune and nervous system
Health professionals advise that to acquire sufficient Vitamin D in your skin, you would need as little as 10 minutes of sun a day. Vitamin D is mainly absorbed through your long bones (arms and legs), so try to get some sunlight and top up your Vitamin D. Not to be confused with sunbathing. The idea of causing trauma to your skin to get a tan or spending long periods in the sun is counterproductive; it’s all about balance. If you plan to be outdoors for extended periods, SPF is strongly advised, and always on your face and neck.
Routine:
The benefits of keeping a solid morning and night routine are important and beneficial; not just for your skin, but for your overall health. Routine helps to provide purpose and structure to our day. Routine is also helpful for the effectiveness of your products. For most products to start showing the effects on the skin, they will require the routine application for at least 2-3 weeks, and longer for best results.
For example, if you are applying retinol once every second week or whenever you remember to, and you do not see results- it’s not the retinol, it just needs to be used consistently.
Products are created with certain application times in mind. For instance, a day moisturiser will help combat free radical damage and protect your skin throughout the day. A night moisturiser is usually richer and used for repairing the skin, as when you are sleeping your body goes into ‘repair mode’. Your skin loves routine as much as you do.
Treat yourself:
Although you can’t have in-clinic treatment, it doesn’t mean you can’t treat yourself. There are so many things you can do at home to give your skin a boost, including:
At home derma rolling:
Derma rolling allows for maximum penetration and effectiveness of your serums by accessing the deeper layers of the skin. Benefits include: Improvement of acne and discolouration Reduction of wrinkles and stretch marks * Improvement in skin texture and complexion
The Skincare Company derma roller is designed with 540 ultra-fine, rmedical grade, 0.25mm stainless steel needles to create multiple surface skin channels. Use 2-3 times weekly in conjunction with your vitamin C, Hyaluronic B5 and/or b3 Niacinamide. See our DIY Derma Roller Kit.
Enzyme peels and scrubs:
Enzymes peel are a great way of polishing the skin, removing dry surface dead skin cells and pore-clogging impurities. The Cosmedix Cranberry Enzyme Peel uses a combination of cranberry enzymes and lactic acid that gently exfoliate the skin leaving it softer, plumper and more hydrated as well as protecting the skin from environmental stressors that can impair the skin’s radiance.
If you’re more into getting physical, a scrub exfoliant helps to mechanically remove dull, dry, dead skin cells, and some, like The Skincare Company’s AHA BHA scrub also have chemical exfoliating properties that help to loosen and desquamate surface dead skin cells and is enriched with antioxidants for brightening.
Masks:
Depending on your skin type and what you’d like to achieve, there is a mask to suit your needs.
