June Acne Awareness Month: Top Acne Treatment & Prevention Tips at Flawless Rejuvenation
June is Acne Awareness Month, which promotes a greater understanding of one of the most common skin conditions that affects so many people.
Whether it’s teenage acne or adult acne, the psychological and emotional effects of acne are profound. Feelings of depression and anxiety can arise, lowered self-esteem, poor self-image, feelings of loneliness and decreased quality of life – just to name a few. In adolescence, many experience bullying as a result of their acne and in turn, a natural reluctance to engage in social and developmental activities. Adults can often experience longer-lasting and deeper breakouts (like cysts and nodules), and the psychological impact can be significant. It can be socially isolating and it may affect professional confidence and personal relationships.
In this blog post we will explore the different types of acne and how it presents, some of the causes of acne, how we can prevent acne, treatment options available at Flawless Rejuvenation, as well as treatment options for acne scarring.

Types of Acne
NON-INFLAMMATORY ACNE: this type of acne is usually milder and not associated with redness or swelling. It can present in Whiteheads (Closed Comedones), which are clogged pores with sebum and dead skin cells. This also includes Blackheads (Open Comedones), where the pores are clogged with oil and skin cells. These appear dark in appearance as they are exposed to the air, which causes oxidation.
INFLAMMATORY ACNE: this type of acne presents as red, swollen and often painful lesions on the jawline, chin and neck (sometimes the chest and back). Below is a breakdown of the types of lesions and how they can appear:
- Papules: small, red, raised bumps – tender to touch
- Pustules: similar to papules but they contain pus – red at the base with white/yellow top
- Nodules: large, painful lumps deep within the skin – formed by clogged pores that become more severely inflamed
- Cysts (cystic acne): this is the most severe form of acne, they present as large, pus-filled and painful lesions. These are painful and can lead to scarring

ACNE VARIANTS
This includes: hormonal acne, fungal acne (Malassezia Folliculitis) and Acne Mechanica.
- Hormonal acne: this often affects women during menstruation, pregnancy, or conditions like PCOS – these typically present around the jawline and lower face
- Fungal acne (Malassezia Folliculitis): caused by yeast rather than bacteria and appears as uniformed itchy pustules, often on the chest and back
- Acne Mechanica: triggered by friction, pressure, or heat (e.g., from helmets, backpacks, or tight clothing)
It’s important to determine and diagnose your specific acne condition, before any treatment plan is put into place. A Dermatologist is the most qualified person, and this may include a visual examination, medical history, skincare routine, hormonal or blood tests (particularly in adult acne). Once you have this diagnosis, our team of healthcare professionals and dermal clinicians can tailor a specific treatment plan.
Leading Causes of Acne
Some additional contributing factors could include: genetics, diet, stress, skincare products, medications, environmental factors.

Acne Prevention
Preventing acne involves a combination of good skincare habits, lifestyle choices, and sometimes medical support, depending on your skin type and the severity of the acne. Here’s how to help prevent breakouts:
- KEEP YOUR SKIN CLEAN: wash your face twice daily (morning and night) with a gentle, non-comedogenic cleanser. After sweating or workouts, cleanse your face to remove oil and bacteria
- AVOID CLOGGING YOUR PORES: use non-comedogenic (doesn’t clog pores) makeup and skincare products, and avoid sleeping with make-up on
- USE THE RIGHT SKINCARE PRODUCTS: Salicylic acid helps unclog pores, Benzoyl peroxide kills acne-causing bacteria, and Retinoids promote cell turnover and prevent clogged pores. It’s also important to avoid harsh scrubs, as they can irritate and worsen acne
- DIET MANAGEMENT: limit high-glycemic foods (sugary snacks, white bread, soft drinks). Some people find reducing dairy, especially skim milk, also helps. Eat a balanced diet rich in omega-3s, fruits, vegetables, and water
- MANAGE STRESS: stress increases hormone levels (like cortisol) that can trigger breakouts. Practice relaxation techniques: sleep well, exercise regularly, try meditation or journaling
- AVOID FRICTION & HEAT: don’t wear tight hats, helmets, or masks for extended periods (acne mechanica). Shower after sweating or workouts to prevent body acne
- SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION/DIAGNOSIS: If you have moderate to severe acne, or it’s not responding to home care, professional treatment may be necessary
Acne Treatment Options
Before any treatment is decided, it’s important to pinpoint the type of acne and severity that needs treatment. Treatments range from over-the-counter products to prescription medications and professional procedures. At Flawless Rejuvenation Hampton, we offer AviClear as a safe and effective treatment for mild to severe acne.
AviClear is the first and original energy device for the treatment of mild, moderate, and severe acne. Engineered with a revolutionary 1726 nm wavelength for all skin types, it selectively targets and suppresses the sebaceous glands, eliminating acne at the source without the need for prescription medications. AviClear is safe and is equipped with exclusive AviCool™ sapphire skin cooling and smart sensors to maximise patient comfort and safety – this also maintains the skin’s temperature during treatment.
HOW DOES AVICLEAR DIFFER FROM OTHER TREATMENTS?
AviClear differs because it’s the only laser to selectively target sebum and suppress the sebaceous glands, eliminating acne at the source. Until now we’ve had treatment options to target the sebaceous glands and shrink them, but this is only masking the problem and a temporary solution. The AviClear treatment has a 92% success rate in over 4000 patients, selectively targeting and shrinking the oil glands.
Many have tried other methods of acne treatment, such as: antibiotics or prescription medications like Roaccutane. A lot of the time these are not successful or the acne has returned later down the track. This is why the AviClear treatment is revolutionary. If you fall into the category of on/off treatment that fails to treat your acne permanently, you could be an ideal candidate.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED & IS IT PAINFUL?
AviClear consists of three treatments, each a month apart. We do experience a number of patients who express some nervousness about the treatment itself regarding pain. However, there is pain management available, which is a specifically compounded topical numbing cream to ensure you are comfortable.
Our patients have coped remarkably well during their treatments and there has never been any regret or the need to to halt treatment.

June Specials
For the month of June 2025 and Acne Awareness Month, we have a number of specials available. This includes: AviClear treatment package and the Biretix skincare collection – a specialised retinoids brand designed for acne-prone skin.

SCARRING
We recommend our AviClear patients to pair their treatments with laser genesis, immediately post treatment. This can enhance the results for pigmentation and post-inflammatory erythema. When it comes to acne/red scarring, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, hyperkeratosis, or textural divots, we would potentially recommend Exion, Pico FX or Fraxel – at the final stages in your acne journey. Our dermal clinicians can discuss this with you and recommend a skincare and treatment regime.
